Speak of the Devil..

I referenced this book by Ray Kurtzweil in an earlier post pretty casually, I'm going to keep referencing it because I am really interested in it. Basically, the premise of his book (it's really long and I'm still only on the second chapter - I'm a lazy reader so it may be a while until I finish it) is that the rate of technological evolution increases at an exponential rate, such that at some point in the near future it will reach a "singularity" and human biological intelligence will fuse with computers (artificial intelligence) and we will be trillions of times smarter than we are now, won't die, will live in virtual reality and real reality simultaneously, all kinds of crazy shit. It's kind of scary, and I'm not sure if I believe it, but a lot of smart people do and so I figure "better safe than sorry".

Anyway, for those of you Kurtzweilian doubters out there, check out what's already happening:

Brain Cells Fused With Computer Chip

I know this is a far cry from an actual fusion of human and artificial intelligence, but just think of how weird and science fiction-esque this would have sounded 15 or 20 years ago. The rate of technology keeps speeding up, I can't remember when the "singularity" is supposed to happen, I think around 2030, so we have plenty of time to mess everything up by then, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I would highly recommend checking out Kurtzweil's site and book - even if what he predicts doesn't happen, it still makes for very interesting reading. He's written lots of other books too, check out his site or type his name in on
